About Botox

Botox is an injectable neuromodulator derived from botulinum toxin A and was first approved by the FDA for cosmetics in 2002. Since then, Botox has enjoyed a wide-spread use in the medical aesthetic community for its anti-aging effects as well as other conditions. When used appropriately, botulinum toxin injection is an overwhelmingly safe method for improving cosmetic defects that are caused by or exacerbated by muscle contraction, such as prominent glabellar lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines. The effects of botulinum toxin are temporary; muscular function typically returns to normal within a 3-4 months. The results of Botox generate a smoother skin surface and promote a rejuvenated, younger appearance.

About Xeomin

Xeomin is also an injectable neuromodulator derived from botulinum toxin A and was first approved by the FDA for cosmetics in 2010. Unlike its counterpart Botox, Xeomin is a pure-form neuromodulator and contains no additives. This allows the product to be stored at room temperature and does not require refrigeration as does Botox. Because there are no additional additives, Xeomin reduces the risk for any allergies or tolerance that may be encountered with Botox injections over time. Xeomin can treat the same areas Botox and also has a duration of 3-4 months before muscles revert to the baseline prior to injections. Xeomin’s outcome mirror Botox, generating a more youthful appearance by eliminating wrinkles lines across all injected areas.

Botox or Xeomin ?

Botox and Xeomin are neuromuscular blockers that are used to temporarily relax muscles in your face and other areas of your body. Both block the signal from the nerve to muscles, causing the muscle to relax. The main distinction between Xeomin and Botox is how they are manufactured. Xeomin is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, while Botox is composed of a complex mixture of proteins. Essentially, this means that Xeomin doesn’t have any additives, while Botox does. With this purified form, the belief is that the risk for allergic reactions is also less with Xeomin compared to traditional Botox. At the moment, there aren’t any comparative studies between the two showing that Xeomin can have fewer side effects like swelling or headaches.

Both products are safe and effective options for improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. The best choice for you will depend on your needs and concerns, along with consulting your provider.
